How can I improve my fertility?

Nutrition should be a gold standard treatment in infertility; assisted reproductive technologies can not protect egg and sperm quality.

#1 - Nourish your body with the nutrients needed for fertility
Good nutrition will improve your gut function, lead to consistent bowel movements, steady sustainable weight loss, increased energy and healthy regular menstrual cycles. All of this can impact fertility success. Supplements definitely have their place, but taking in the wrong ones for you or an excessive amount can put your liver through a lot of unnecessary strain. You can’t out supplement a poor diet, so optimise your diet. Food first.
Colourful fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants i.e., vitamin C, E, carotenoids and selenium which can help to improve our egg and sperm quality. They reduce oxidative stress which is damaging to our cells. Whenever we step out of our door we are bombarded with environmental toxins, but every time we eat we have the opportunity to take in these protective antioxidants to quench free radicals and lower oxidative stress in our bodies.
Prioritising dark green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables which contain Indole 3-Carbinol aids our liver detoxification and oestrogen balance. This can be especially beneficial in the case of oestrogen dominant conditions such as endometriosis.
High quality healthy fats are essential in a fertility diet as they are the building blocks for our sex hormones. I can’t stress how important these are for fertility. Daily omega-3 fatty acids (oily fish, flaxseeds etc.) support cell membranes and supply energy to oocytes (eggs).
#2 - Support your body through lifestyle
Reducing stress and optimising sleep is paramount. Stress is a signal to your reproductive system that now is not a good or safe time to reproduce, this can interfere with levels of sex hormones and periods and ovulation can stop. Cortisol our stress hormone can actually 'steal' the ingredients needed to make progesterone, which is an essential hormone for fertility.
#3 - Optimise your environment
Toxins in modern life are unavoidable, but reducing endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which are found in household products and cosmetics can really help. These interfere with sperm and egg quality, change hormone levels, menstrual cycles and damage sperm DNA.
Eat organic where possible. Pesticides are linked to ovarian disorders, miscarriage and premature birth and can really disrupt our fertility.
#4 - Get to the root cause of the issue
If you have been told you have ‘unexplained fertility’ this really can be many issues lumped together into a ‘don’t know why group’. Whilst this is upsetting and incredibly frustrating there are many functional tests that can be done to determine what the root cause of your infertility is, leaving no stone unturned.
The food we eat and the environment we bathe our cells in can have an incredible impact on fertility success.
