This is a question I get asked a lot, and my answer is yes, eat organic whenever possible.
Fruits and vegetables are treated with toxic pesticides, and these pesticides can still be found on the surface of the fruits and vegetables when they are purchased from your local shop.
We now know that exposure to these pesticides is detrimental to our health and can increase the risk of developing asthma, ADHD, cognitive and brain diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, as well as certain cancers. Exposure has also been associated with hormone disruption, causing fertility and reproductive issues.
We also know it is more expensive to go organic, and it’s not always feasible for everyone to go 100% organic. That’s why the Environmental Working Group (EWG) came up with the ‘Clean 15 and dirty Dozen’ lists to help you prioritise your organic produce choices.
Dirty Dozen
These are the fruits and vegetables that often carry higher pesticide residues, which could impact the immune system. Think strawberries, spinach, kale, and more. Opting for organic options from this list can help reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and support your health.
Clean Fifteen
On the brighter side, these fruits and vegetables have the lowest pesticide residues. Avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, and onions are among the cleanest picks! This means that it is not as critical to go organic with these foods.
Making informed food choices is key to supporting your body's immune system and resilience. Small changes can really make a big difference to your health, so why not pick two items from the dirty dozen list to start going organic with?
